Following the successful Club Open Day in May a large influx of new members this year, many of whom were new to bowls, meant that the club was able to run a novice competition for the first time in many years.

The competition was run as a league which started back in July and comprised ten entrants all trying to win the 'New Bowler of the Year 2023' trophy. For new bowlers the standard of play was impressive from the onset and clearly some of the newbies benefitted from the coaching sessions run by Tony Partridge on Saturday mornings. The coaching sessions have now finished for 2023 but will be returning for the 2024 season.

The new players not only had to battle each other they also had to battle the elements as 2023 proved to be one of our wettest bowling seasons for some time. Neverthless they endured the adverse conditions with great determination coming up with some super contests.

Jeremy Good pushed his nose in front quite early on but got a little nervous as some pretty big moves up the table were made by the opposition as the competition drew to a close. In the event he got home by 7 shots over second placed Peter Iles and 10 shots ahead of third placed Julian Rudkin.

Well done to all the players for an excellent competition which has inspired some of them to want to try their hand at league bowling in 2024.

Our photographs show the players who attended the last session on 17th September and the trophy being awarded to Jeremy by competiton organiser Peter Yates.
