Wenlock Olympian Bowls 2026
Much Wenlock Bowling Club
We have to wait four years for every Olympic Games but local bowlers can enjoy the Olympian spirt every year by entering the Wenlock Olympian Bowls competitions.
Dr William Penny Brookes got the bowling started in the Gaskell Recreation Grounds over 100 years ago and the 2026 Wenlock Olympian games were held again recently on Saturday 27th June and Sunday 5th July. The competitions, which were sanctioned by the Much Wenlock Olympian Society and Shropshire Crown Green Bowling Association, were organised by veteran top bowler Bob Mumford who was ably supported by a number of Much Wenlock club members.
As well as our club bowlers the games attracted first rate bowlers from the wider Mid Shropshire area including some who have represented the County at the highest level.
June 27th saw the Men’s and Ladies singles competitions. The Ladies competition saw Charleigh Butler from the Prince Hotel BC Shrewsbury taking on Linda Lowe from Broseley. It was an extremely competitive match with Linda gaining a significant early lead. Charleigh never gave up though and gradually overcame the deficit to win the title by just one shot. Phew!!
In the Men’s singles, a large field was gradually whittled down to the two semi-finals . The 2024 winner, Emmet McKinley, returned to take on Much Wenlock club member, Geoff Wills and Ben Delves from Sir John Bayley BC Wellington, faced Atcham bowler, John Phillips. Emmet met John in the final and after a nip and tuck game Emmet came out on top winning 21-17 to regain his Gold title.
The Doubles competition on Sunday 5th July attracted a strong field of 46 bowlers. Local bowlers Janet and Jeremy Good reached the semi-finals but after 8 hours of bowling during the day the final saw Broseley pairing Gail Hall and Kevin Carter take on the Sir John Bayley bowler Chris Dodds who teamed up with singles winner Emmet McKinley. After a game of the highest order, Emmet and Chris came out on top winning 21-12.
Our photographs show the Singles finalists with Organiser Bob Mumford and Much Wenlock Olympian Society Official Chris Cannon and the Double finalists with Bob Mumford and Much Wenlock Bowling Club President, Don Davies.
